The Very First Step to Spot Counterfeit Essential Oils
The very first test I use to spot any potential counterfeit essential oils is the price range. You should question any vendor offering rose or sandalwood oil for the same price as their tea tree, eucalyptus, or lavender.
Sandalwood, rose, jasmine, tuberose, and neroli essential oils are some of the more precious oils, and they regularly sell for upwards of 15$ per ml.
These oils are pretty valuable and if they're selling for 1$ a ml unfortunately the probability that you are not buying real essential oil is close to 100.
To put things into perspective, it takes around 4 million hand-picked jasmine blossoms or 2 tonnes of rose petals to produce half a kilo of essential oil. There is just no way it would sell for 1$ per ml. Sandalwood trees require maturation of at least 30 years before they give the much sought after Sandalwood essential oil. It is definitely not going to sell for the same price as Lavender. You only need 68 kilograms of Lavender flowers to produce half a kilo of Lavender oil.
